Ten Dos and Don’ts for Job Interviews

February 22, 2018

When you're interviewing for a job, the little things can make a big difference.  Even the most seasoned and qualified professionals still take time to prepare for interviews.  Why? Because you only get one chance to make a great first impression.  Here are a few things to keep in mind that will help you look more polished and prepared:

Do …

  • research the agency, company or organization that you’re interviewing with; it’ll help you shine during the interview

  • think about three key messages that you want to make sure you share during the interview; your top three selling points

  • bring extra resumes and, if applicable, your portfolio to showcase some of your previous work and achievements

  • come prepared with questions about the job, the organization, the team that you’d be working with – your research will help here

  • appreciate the value of a hand-written thank you note; write your note right after the interview; make it personal and conversational; you’ll be remembered

Don’t …

  • chew gum during an interview; it’s super annoying

  • answer questions with one word; everything is an invitation for you to tell a story about yourself

  • wear jeans and tennis shoes;  this is your chance to make a great first impression;  look your best

  • ask what the job pays and how much vacation you’ll get; save these questions for the second or third interview

  • look down when speaking; avoiding eye contact will make you appear less confident
